A lil party game with ChatGPT

If you’ve been on the internet lately, you’ve seen headlines like this:

  • Generate 500 post ideas in 5 minutes with Chat GPT
  • 10 Chat GPT prompts to save you 10+ hours in user research
  • Top Chat GPT prompts to write copy for your business
  • Prompt writing for lawyers
  • 13 techniques to get ahead with generative AI

But forget hacking through tasks when you could use generative AI to giggle (competitively) with your friends. Our co-founders ran a prompt battle at a talk on Generative Storytelling at betaworks last Fall. Evelyn, an engineer on our team, took the idea and created her version for our staff game club last week. It was such a blast; we decided to share it with all of you. Remote teams still need team-building activities, right? Plus, at the low, low price of less than a penny per query, it’s never been more disastrous.

To play, you need a group of people, at least three but preferably more, with each person having access to the same generative AI system (such as ChatGPT).

The game is a series of rounds, where each round goes like this:

  1. One player suggests a suitable theme for writing a machine-learning prompt. A good example might be “a story about the ocean.”
  2. Two players have 30 seconds to write the best prompt based on the theme. During that time, they can refine their prompt as often as they like. No cheating by prompting the AI to repeat your work verbatim!
  3. After 30 seconds, each player clears their response and runs the prompt as-is in front of the group.
  4. The remaining players vote on their favorite results.

The winner of each round proceeds to the following round until everyone has played. Then, a final winner is declared!

You can run this in other ways, such as this one inspired by Apples to Apples: players take turns as the judge, award a point to the best prompt across all other players, and you go around the group and play to a winning number of points.

If you’re thinking about using AI for games, we’d love to hear from you. We’ll be at GDC soon so please be in touch if you’d like to see us there!
